VantagePoint Guide to Bimini
Leading the Development of South Bimini For years the term Bimini was synonymous with North Bimini, in particular Alice Town and the nearby hotels and marinas. South Bimini was the sleepy next door neighbor with little to offer the visiting yachtsman. For many years the island was essentially undeveloped except for the airport and a few scattered private residences. All that changed when ground was broken on the Bimini Sands Resort and Marina, a condo development and marina. To the surprise of many, the project has been an unqualified success and led to the revitalization of South Bimini. So successful, in fact, that the development has been completely sold out with a total of 214 units! It’s taken awhile, but South Bimini is finally starting to emerge from the shadow of its more famous neighbor.
The resort is located directly on a secluded beach and features lovely ocean views
Marina The protected deepwater marina currently has 80 slips with an additional 60 under construction. Slips feature floating Bellingham docks, concrete pilings, 30/50 amp power and metered water. Draft is maintained to 8-feet at low water. Yachts up to 100+ feet can be accommodated. Modern restrooms, showers and on-premise laundry facilities are available to guests. The marina also has a full service Texaco StarPort offering gas and diesel fuel. Slips are $1.10 per foot.
Unlike some of the docks on North Bimini that have a wicked harbor current, the Bimini Sands Marina, by nature of its protected design, has none to speak of. When we first started going to Bimini we used to joke that docking in the harbor current was scarier than crossing the Gulf Stream.
Accommodations Most condo units are available for rent to visiting yachtsmen, many with direct oceanfront views. Reservations are handled by the Bimini Sands staff which also serves as the onsite property manager. Rates vary according to view, number of rooms and time of year. Being private dwellings, the condos offer a full range of amenities such as kitchens, full appliances, dining areas, outside decks and satellite TV. Rates start at $260 per night.
Other Amenities The grounds are clean and modern. There is an onsite front office, Customs building, gift shop and more. You can relax in the swimming pool or grab a bite at the Petit Conch restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Drinks can also be enjoyed al fresco at the Square Grouper Tiki bar, located by the swimming pool. Nearby are cooking grills for those who have had success fishing. Day and night security is provided for the marina and condo units.
Because of the scarcity of freshwater on the islands, Bimini Sands invested millions in building a large-scale water desalinization plant. The capacity far exceeds the needs of the development itself. The developers also constructed a compete sewage treatment facility.
Room / Dock Service Starting this year Bimini Sands will offer room service delivered to your condo or your yacht. Please check with the front desk for hours.
Fishing Tournaments Following successful past events, Bimini Sands will be hosting a number of fishing tournaments during the upcoming year. For dates and entry requirements please contact the main office.
Activities Bimini Sands has bikes, golf carts, kayaks and small boats to rent along with paved tennis courts. All inclusive dive packages can also be arranged. You can even wander over to the remains of an old Bimini house built with a conch shell foundation or check out the house where Adam Clayton Powell lived while on Bimini. Of course the white sand beach is just steps away from your door. For the kiddies there’s a cute little tide pool to frolic in.
Those who crave the nightlife of Alice Town can always hop the water taxi over for $2.00 each way. Taxi transportation on South Bimini is an additional $3.00, though you can easily walk to the water taxi landing from Bimini Sands. Or pile in the dinghy and be your own water taxi.
Island Weddings Though it was never the developer’s intention, Bimini Sands has hosted a number of weddings and their popularity just keeps increasing. If you are interested, please contact the main office.
In Conclusion Staying at Bimini Sands gives you the best of both worlds. The quiet, relaxed atmosphere of South Bimini in a location that is within easy reach of the sometimes rowdy nightlife on North Bimini. Plus you have a picture postcard sunset every night.
